An Introduction

Why did I create this web site?

On 15 January 2026, my wife suffered a serious injury while walking our dog. She slipped on an uncleared, rutted, icy residential street; a street that had not been cleared all winter, despite over three quarters of a metre of snowfall.

After falling, she spent about an hour lying on that icy road in subzero temperatures, until an ambulance arrived and the paramedics were able to bring her on board. One of our sons was able to reach her within about 15 minutes of her injury and lay a heavy comforter on top of her to help keep her warm; I arrived about 10 minutes later with my other son, provided more warm clothing, and did an initial first aid assessment. At that point, we realized she needed medical attention and called 911.

Because of the icy, rutted conditions, the paramedics needed assistance from our sons and me to load my wife onto a gurney. During our time at Royal Alexandra Hospital Emergency, we heard from other paramedics that road conditions had been hindering their operations, and in some cases emergency vehicles were getting stuck while attempting to reach injured persons. This very thing was reported by Global News on January 13. City News also reported that in December 2025, emergency crews responded to 1,064 slip, trip, and fall injuries. I haven't seen the number for January 2026, but I don't doubt it was comparable or greater.

My wife spent six weeks in a hospital bed as a result of her injury, and over eight months later has not completely recovered. As a result of that injury, and my understanding of widespread harm to members of the public, I made inquiries with my City Councillor. These have to date provided limited satisfaction and increased my level of frustration.

Based on the engineering role of the City Operations department, I filed a professional practice complaint with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA); that is currently on hold, with the onus for collection of evidence having been placed on me. The opacity of the City's operations makes this a daunting task.

These initial efforts prompted me to submit several requests to the City under the Access to Information Act; I am currently waiting for responses on those, though I have been provided with a fee estimate of over $4,000 to fulfil just one of those requests. In the meantime, I have compiled and scrutinized information from public sources that has only increased my concern with the way the Mayor and City Administration handled this issue.

So here we are. I've created this web site to document relevant information, communications, and activities related to my efforts to obtain answers, promote transparency, and demand accountability from the City of Edmonton. I welcome feedback in the form of constructive comments and information relevant to the topic.
